2013 Fall Career Fair Summary Executive Summary: Student participation in the fair increased slightly by 8.4%, from 718 to 778. Participation is still well below the recent high of 1,208 high in 2008 and there is continuing concern over the level of student participation. The Jones College of Business had the most students followed by the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, 30.2% and 22.5% respectively. Employer participation was down by 6 from 119 to 113 or 5.0%. Staff members continue to have to work the phones and email to get employers registered before the event. This takes valuable staff time away from marketing the event to students. The top two ways students found out about the fair continue to be faculty and email, 27.2% and 21.3% respectively. However, the gap between the two methods narrowed with faculty decreasing and email increasing, both for the third straight year. This report contains the following sections: A. Employer Evaluations This year the employer survey used a 5-point rating scale instead of the 4-point rating scale that was used for many years. It will be difficult to compare this year to past years but the 5-point scale gives a more accurate picture. There were 113 employer registrations through Lightning JobSource. Two employers did not show up (Social Security Administration and B&B Specialty Contractors). Two attended without registering (MTSU Graduate Studies, Murray State University). The total employer attendance was 113. A total of 82 employer evaluations were received resulting in a 72.6% response rate. This year employers and graduate/professional schools received the same evaluation form. The employer is noted at the end of the comment if they self-identified. Comments are broken out by categories or themes. The entire comment is listed and some are listed twice under different themes. Student Preparation: "Best resumes I have seen and initiations. Best parking accommodations." United States Marine Corps "Students had trouble approaching the table and introducing themselves. They need to learn to sell themselves, as well as dress appropriately." "The food was great and the students were professional and well-prepared. Staff was very helpful and this was a great event!" - EHS Technologies "Students should be dressed properly. Students should also go to talk to everyone due to most businesses have positions in different departments that they could apply for. The space and accommodations were very nice." "Resume classes during event would benefit some of the applicants." - Towne Park "11-1 instead of 10-2: first hour and last hour slow. Students more professional in dress and communication than previous fairs." "Students need to know what they are looking for." - Verizon Wireless "Quality of resumes was good. Need more of a student turn-out." Buckeye International "We had better success with a few of the alumni that attended the events. Many of the students were shy and didn't know what they wanted to do with their major. In addition many of the students had a hard time selling themselves. (However, we do understand that many of them are freshman or underclassmen.) - Kroger Accounting Center "Students were not prepared with 'elevator speeches' and did not do research on our company." - OHL "Have students major on name tags." "Better prep of students. Staff was friendly and helpful." "Students should be informed 1) of appropriate attire, and 2) to end cell phone calls before engaging recruiter. Students should engage recruiters in areas that they are not interested to quelch nerves before approaching potential employers." - Nashville School of Law "Students did not research our company. Most wanted a 'management' role with no experience on resume…" Nissan "Student volunteers in parking lot to help carry items/assist would be nice. Emailing the directions/map/logistics more than the day before would be helpful as I was already on the road and had no way to print it. The link did not work to get the map. More student participation would make it more worthwhile." "We have had many interns from MTSU through the years and in most cases they have been excellent. We have also hired many of the MTSU interns by jobs with us. We appreciate this event very much!" - Dish Magazine Student Turnout: "More student participation and would like to meet some professors." - Jackson National Life "Great turnout! Nice, open space-friendly staff! Thanks." - All About Care "A few students were obviously fulfilling a class requirement by attending-takes away from the true job seekersplease discourage." "There were too many students that came just for grabbing a flyer for extra credit. Please make the fee for nonprofits less expensive." "Need more aerospace students." - Delta Airlines "11-1 instead of 10-2: first hour and last hour slow. Students more professional in dress and communication than previous fairs." "More student participation-poor for student population." "Quality of resumes was good. Need more of a student turn-out." Buckeye International 2013 Career Fair Summary Page 9 of 17 Cost: "Advertise more to Aerospace students." - Express Jet Airlines "Very few candidates with 60 semester hours of college and who are at least 21 years of age." - Brentwood Police "Pretty good, was a little slow." "I wish we could get more students to attend! Looking for events with 1000+ students for our type of recruiting." "Coordinate better with aviation school. We all have corporate jobs as well as jobs in dispatch, crew scheduling, as well as pilots and flight attendants. I would reconsider doing this career fair on a Thursday or Friday around Homecoming weekend!" - Republic Airways "Too high." (in reference to registration cost) "Too costly." - University of Memphis-School of Public Health "There were too many students that came just for grabbing a flyer for extra credit. Please make the fee for nonprofits less expensive." Food: "BBQ is too messy for food at an event like this!" "Food-would be nice to have an option for vegetarian for lunch." – Target "The food was great and the students were professional and well-prepared. Staff was very helpful and this was a great event!" - EHS Technologies "Food heavy but good." Event Logistics: "When arriving/check in, have someone explain where meals are and process otherwise, great service! Also, email confirmations 24-48 hours prior to career fair. I had a lot of unanswered questions about the career fair." Bankers Life and Casualty "We would have loved to be on the side with more traffic!" "You forgot to put us on the program." - WSMV-TV Channel 4 "Possibly try to group grad/professional schools in more grouped setting. Overall-a good event." - Belmont Law "Best resumes I have seen and initiations. Best parking accommodations." United States Marine Corps "Better signage to direct to event." "Better driving direction." - Total Quality Logistics "Provide instructions on where to park with confirmation email-drove around a bit before I realized there was reserved parking. Was confused when parking attendant directed car in front of me away; I assumed the lot was full at first." "Better prep of students. Staff was friendly and helpful." "Student volunteers in parking lot to help carry items/assist would be nice. Emailing the directions/map/logistics more than the day before would be helpful as I was already on the road and had no way to print it. The link did not work to get the map. Nice, open space-friendly staff! Thanks." - All About Care "Students should be dressed properly. Students should also go to talk to everyone due to most businesses have positions in different departments that they could apply for. The space and accommodations were very nice." General: "Thank you for hosting this career fair! We look forward to many more in the future!" - Regions Bank "We have met some candidates that we are looking forward to learning more about. It's been a good experience and we look forward to next year!" - Northwestern Mutual "Thank you for having us! Grouped all aerospace groups together. I want more global companies can come here. Offer more national-wide position Would be nice to try to get some med schools. Very informative. Mostly business/engineering/sales; not really much in my areas of interest-I'd like to see more research or science based tables, personally I liked that they had graduate schools come to the fair. Needed Med schools/research opportunities More employers for those in the sciences. It would be great if they take positions for quality control chemists More opportunities for part-time jobs I did not find it helpful at all Very disappointing. Companies relating to "Chemistry" research or education would have been helpful. There were a lot of good companies here. I like how each booth was detailed The free swag. Nothing needed improvement. None at all. It was well put together Everyone is very friendly Wide array of companies present, all looking for candidates. Great selection, a lot of IT. Layout was good I enjoyed the quantity of employers here. Loved the map telling which majors Awesome Lots of companies with needs of all majors It was great to get to meet with the employers. No real improvement comment here. Plenty of good companies. No areas need improvement. More companies need to be specific on what they are looking for. I see "all majors" and I think "crummy sales job." Very good. Keep growing. Reach out to more businesses. Lost 90% of the time. More than 4 hours would be nice. Outstanding It's very well organized, each year! Lots of great jobs. I liked variety of opportunities. I would like to see more ECE-specific opportunities. There wasn't much relating to my major. More science related jobs, especially forensic related I'd like to see more agriculture/animal science and publishing employer. Ag wasn't represented. Needs more math major required fields Good diversity of companies Hope offer more analysis positions instead of sales positions. The career fair was smoothly planned and done very well 2013 Career Fair Summary Page 14 of 17 More engineering jobs Many employers in one place. Would like to have seen more engineering companies. Very resourceful Nicely organized, friendly people, Amy was very polite 2013 Student Survey Comments – Behavioral and Health Sciences: I gained knowledge on careers I have been seeking info on. A lot of great companies I really enjoyed how everywhere I stopped they were very friendly and helpful on the questions that were asked. Awesome! Great! Great More jobs or career interest for CJA majors and not specific concentrations for grad school. I liked the friendliness of each business or school that was here. Including more agencies for majors in Criminal Justice. Yes. Very organized; more law enforcement opportunities (i.e. Metro-Nashville, TBI) I was able to talk to someone about my major and the job I really want. It was well-rounded. I enjoyed my time at the fair. It's a great opportunity to take advantage of! All was well organized and helpful. More Social Sciences, Psychological and Social Work organizations. MTSU is known for these! I liked everything. The varieties of businesses that were offered here at the fair. More businesses for all majors can be presented. The career fair was important for me to go to. Thanks I liked that there were many different jobs that were hiring right now. Loved it. Enjoyed meeting and talking with possible employers. Expected a lot more people here. Definitely going to fix my resume. There's not a lot of organization in healthcare It was great! Very insightful. I liked how nice the people were. Can you try to have more science-related/healthcare employers next time? Thanks They were helpful. More focused on IT, technical, and management than I was looking for. More entry level/health services positions Very informative It was very helpful. Opportunities for growth. Air conditioning Love the fair, wish there were more Healthcare company there. I would like to see more options here. Not many psych/health opportunities I love the smiling faces of the employees! Very interesting All of the vendors were friendly and I received a lot of information. The organization is excellent; companies attend to you in good manners and accurate explanations. 2013 Career Fair Summary Page 15 of 17 2013 Student Survey Comments – College of Business Comments: Very informative so far good communication skills I always enjoy coming to the career fair. I found my last internship at the career fair. That it gives you an option to see what out there. Counter should be arranged industry wise like Business, Staffing, Health, Sales, Marketing, Finance, etc. Current settings working good as well, but that will be more preferable. Glad it's on campus during the day and like there were many employers represented. Send an email of a few employers represented to get an idea of who will be attending. Nothing really everything was great Helpfulness with navigating different areas Need air conditioning, it's hot! Strong selection of employers to talk to. It was great, all good info People are very polite. It is really uncomfortable in here. It was hot-more A/C needed lots of companies The map is hard to read, some companies are not interested in college students. Positives: Great company Turnout Had plenty of information that was helpful. Good grouping for employers-but it was HOT! Just the personality of the vendors. It was kind of hot I like the variety of firms here. Entrance needs to be more clearly marked. It was great. Very diverse collection of employers How nice and informative the employers were It was great and I got a lot of information about different companies Great Job! Keep up Everything was neatly organized. Good variety of companies. Very hot walking around. A lot of good employers networking is good. Everything. Just to give students ability to view what companies are looking for. I enjoyed the numerous companies available and the friendly setup. Great companies The variety of jobs was awesome! Good one I liked that there was a map and list, it made it easier I liked that all of the vendors were friendly and very informative Have water to give out to students Fantastic event I liked the many different options Loved it! It's very organized, relaxing, and spacious. Good job. It's a little bit hot here. There was a lot of variety. A lot of different companies, not sure. Variety of opportunities available. 2013 Career Fair Summary Page 16 of 17 2013 Student Survey Comments – College of Education: It was good. Everyone was nice. 2013 Student Survey Comments – College of Liberal Arts: Need actual numbers on booth for faster accessibility. Everyone was extremely friendly. It was cool not enough communications jobs. I enjoyed it. I was happy to see more of a variety of graduate schools, booths for Writing/English majors, and magazines. It will be better to provide more details of all the organizations Very well organized; people were very nice and inviting The fair had a good variety of companies and positions but the companies need to be as on-time as the students. Some tables were empty at 10 A.M. It was surprising the number of opportunities available. Plenty of companies. Need more federal gov't agencies looking to recruit people. It would be great to have Federal Agencies present. Lots of options. More vendors and opportunities The opportunity for a great career. I liked the overall ease and convenience of the entire thing. Ethical corporations There wasn't anything related to my major. Being able to meet with recruiters one-on-one. Need some AC-it's too hot. Larger number of signs so we can better navigate through the fair. More company involvement Everybody was helpful, informative, set up was effective 2013 Student Survey Comments – College of Mass Comm: There is not a lot of entry-level positions for freshmen. More short-term employment for those working through school. Everything, no flaws. It was more personal than searching online and in some cases more pertinent. Everything was great. Everybody was very friendly and helpful. It was a lot of friendly people. I would like to see more advertisement and more Radio/TV jobs. It was awesome. Many opportunities and booths to visit. Great organization and set up. The advice from future employers on what needs to be done for my career field. You have a wide variety of businesses, but not many focused in Mass Comm. All the different areas of field studies and they were very informal. I love how they are honest in what they are/aren't looking for. It was well-spaced out, but I feel that wasn't as much of a variety of potential employers as expected. I believe that there were more internships for alumni rather than for current students. very good interaction You should have the U.S. Airforce I don't feel prepared for the job hunt. Better organization with majors companies are looking for. There should be colored-coded stickers on each table in accordance to the color of degree…i.e. pink sticker on tables hiring for mass comm majors. Employers stay until end of career fair. It was very interactive I liked everything about the career fair. Everything 2013 Career Fair Summary Page 17 of 17 Low pressure, learned a lot about Graduate Music programs The politeness of everyone was great. Could use more entertainment opportunities. Everything was fine, but there wasn't enough businesses/orgs for anything dealing with Music Industry-Music Business They should have at least 1 person there at the table at all times. I liked the setup. I would improve the entrances. It was great! Booths were informative and friendly. More RIM specific booths More media companies Likes: Format, Number, and Variety Improvements: more companies More recording industry jobs It was organized still wish there was music business options Wafflehouse Very organized-more recording industry programs would be great. 2013 Student Survey Comments – University College: Didn’t really find any positions in my field-admin/electrical setup was good, staff friendly Easy to get to everyone, Lots of different companies. Happy with everything. It was very well organized. It would be nice to have more of a variety of companies Nice People Great but tables are spaced awkwardly 2013 Student Survey Comments – No College Listed: I liked the professional atmosphere all the career representatives displayed. Everything More Jobs Variety of companies It was helpful and a lot of booths There could have been more art-related companies Needs more fashion business Well set up. Professional. Perfect just the way it is. Well put together, very helpful, and very informational. It had all info I was looking for. It was all in my interest of studies. Candy It was cool, a lot of great booths. I liked meeting different employers and being exposed to different careers. Needs more government employers/booths. Everyone was nice and helpful. However, most companies were looking for IT or Sales which is not directed toward my major, Business Management.
